Overland West Africa: A Realistic Guide To The Coastal Route
Borders, buses, budgets and the things nobody writes down
Lagos to Dakar by road is entirely possible. It is also slower, cheaper and more paperwork-heavy than any blog will tell you.
The West African coastal corridor runs through six countries, four currencies and a dozen border posts. Travelled with patience, it is one of the great overland routes anywhere. Travelled on a schedule, it will break you.
Documents first
ECOWAS nationals move relatively freely; everyone else should assume a visa per country and start six weeks out. Carry a yellow fever certificate — it is checked, often. Make paper photocopies of everything, because the checkpoint that needs them will not have power.
How the transport actually works
Shared taxis and minibuses leave when full, not at a time. That single fact governs the whole trip. Arrive at the park early in the morning, buy the last two seats yourself if you need to leave, and expect the vehicle to stop more than you planned.
Money
The route crosses CFA franc zones, the cedi and the naira. ATMs are reliable in capitals and unreliable everywhere else. Carry a clean, small emergency reserve in a hard currency, and change at licensed bureaux rather than at borders where the rate is theatre.
Budget the days, not the kilometres. Distance is not the constraint — the border is.
What to expect at borders
Immigration is usually straightforward and free. Informal requests happen. Stay polite, stay unhurried, ask for a receipt, and keep the tone light — the overwhelming majority of crossings end with a stamp and a wave.
Realistic timings
Lagos to Accra is a long single day if the Seme crossing behaves. Accra to Abidjan, another. Abidjan through to Dakar, four to six days with stops. Three weeks makes the route enjoyable. Ten days makes it a blur of bus parks.
Go in the dry season, pack half of what you planned, and let the schedule go.
